  • Got this from an email. I found it funny. Maybe because law has warped my mind to the extent that I now find anything funny (not much different from my former self I suppose).

Chinese man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to China on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Chinese man hands over the keys to a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank.

He produces the title and everything checks out. The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Chinese man for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the Chinese man returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi-millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000.

The Chinese Man replies: "Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"

Ah, the mind of the Chinese...

  • So the RIAA's recent crackdown has scared the lot of you from downloading music.

I guess the threat of being sued is enough to strike terror into the hearts of the guilty. But what about the innocent?

The RIAA confirmed today that it had withdrawn its lawsuit for now against a 66 year old Boston-area woman for sharing more than 2,000 songs including Trick Daddy's "I'm a Thug" and Busta Rhyme's soothing melodies.

Assuming the old lady is innocent (I'm sure she's a hidden gangsta underneath her fragile exterior), imagine the look on her face when the subpoena reached her. Who's this Busta Rhymes character? Why are they threatening me? The old lady can probably bring a counter-lawsuit if she can prove she suffered emotional distress as a result of that false claim. Oh how funny the law can be.

She uses a MAC, which immediately convinced the RIAA to withdraw the suit for now (since there aren't any MAC Kazaa programs). Score one for Macintosh! Silly practical users who use Windows-based computers which cost 50% less money and can run about 90% of software. Just silly. I'm heading out to some store that sells overpriced, impractical MACs to buy one immediately!

Anyway, does this raise questions about the fallibility of the ongoing pursuit for music pirates? Was the RIAA reckless in its crusade against the evil-doers of our time?

I'm definitely not about to answer that now. Too focused on my homework. Three classes tomorrow, means lots of homework today in addition to my legal writing assignment due on Monday. I actually went to the library today for research. Amazing. I don't think I've been to the library in undergrad more than 10 times my entire life.

  • Hmm, I don't know why I like the music of DMX, aka Earl Simmons, so much. He's perpetually angry, he cusses all the time, sings about killing people, etc etc. (he'd probably kill me because I called him Earl), yet there's this fascinating attribute about him and his songs that appeal to me. Do I have a hidden choleric and violent side waiting to erupt?

I like Wu-Tang too, but their songs aren't as angry. It's a different type of rap. Nevertheless, Wu-Tang is still one of my favorites right up there with DMX.

Oh yeah, this is music I study to. My mind works better with DMX and Wu-Tang blasting in the background. Call me weird I suppose.

Oh yeah, I couldn't resist taking the "geek quiz" posted on CaffeineNicotine's site. I don't agree with my results at all. I believe I'm MUCH MORE geek. Here is my result:

    :
    You are 23% geek
OK, so maybe you ain't a geek. You do, at least, show a bit of interest in the world around you. Either that, or you have enough of a sense of humor to pick some of the sillier answers on the test. Regardless, you're probably a pretty nifty, well-rounded person who gets along fine with people and can chat with just about anyone without fear of looking stupid or foolish or overly concerned with minutiae. God, I hate you.
